If someone is planning to apply for a PhD program in the US next year, which typically takes 5 to 6 years to complete. With the recent news that the US is ending the "Duration of Status" (D/S) system and capping initial stays at 4 years, It is getting anxious. How risky is the extension process midway through a doctoral program? Are universities expected to provide specific administrative support for these extensions, or should we expect significant delays and potential rejections?
